Women in Leadership: Store Managers

Welcome back to our Women in Leadership blog series! In this series, we highlight female leaders across Publix and learn about their career paths. We are honored to have passionate female leaders in the company. In fact, we were recognized as one of Fortune’s Best Workplaces for Women last year.

At Publix, we have female leaders in all areas of the company — our stores, corporate offices, distribution centers and the list goes on! Today, we hear from two store managers who quickly fell in love with the Publix culture and realized a long-term career with Publix was what they wanted.

Meet Megan, Store Manager in Tennessee .

Megan is truly a part of the Publix family. She’s the daughter, granddaughter, niece and wife of many past and present Publix associates. Megan started at Publix with a part-time job and quickly realized she had a passion for serving customers. After graduating, she decided to follow in the footsteps of her family and make Publix her long-term career.

“The thing that is most fulfilling about working at Publix is helping a customer in need or helping my associates grow in their careers. I see leadership as an opportunity to serve others. The environment in which we lead is ever changing, so listening to customers and associates helps me understand what I need to focus on,” she shared.

Outside of helping customers and associates, she also finds it helpful to mentor other managers in the company.

She told us, “Mentoring others only makes me a stronger leader myself. I keep a ‘work bible’ in my car and read it every day before walking into work. It’s by John Maxwell and is called The Maxwell Daily Reader: 365 Days of Insight to Develop the Leader Within You and Influence Those Around You.”

She encourages others to seek out what they love to do and to remember things are not always going to be easy because nothing worth achieving ever is. She reminds her associates that if you enjoy what you do, it is well worth it in the end.

Meet Christy, Store Manager in Georgia .

At the age of 16, Christy worked at a grocery competitor and walked to work every day. When a new Publix store was built near her home, she applied for a position in hopes of shortening her walk to work. Christy was hired as a cashier at this new location, and it didn’t take long for her to realize the potential behind this simple decision and what it could mean for her personal development and career.

“I really enjoyed the training program, team building and the positive work atmosphere, along with being around friendly customers. My new Publix family encouraged me every day and were instrumental in opening my eyes to the possibility of a long-term career,” she said.

Having a Publix family that consisted of fellow associates and customers drove Christy to set goals in her career.

“I believe the goals I set contributed to my success with Publix because it instilled in me a conviction to make the most of these same principles I learned as a teenager: training, team building and fostering a positive workplace. I thought, if I could continue to put forth positive energy and further those principles that made me who I am today, then I could help encourage future leaders of Publix to do the same.”

Christy continues to see the positive in everyone and works to help other associates achieve their goals. She encourages every team member to strive for the opportunities they seek, and always give it their all and harness their passion.
